Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read. So even if you only can read rudimentary bangla, with the translation you can figure out what is going on in bangla and see what the translator has inevitably changed. Each poem has the Bengali text and on the opposite page the English translation. The editions are amazing if you are bilingual or if you are a student of Bengali. I would have apprise aged more detail there. But then it only dedicates a few short paragraphs to introducing each author and their lives and the unique angle they had on baul philosophy. Each volume in this set has a rather good basic introduction to the baul movement at the start of the book. But at his worst it just seems uninspired.Īnother thing. There are of course exceptions, he has his fiery moments but they are few and far between. At its best, his poetry is like Tagores, calming and reminding one of the unity of the vast cosmos. It doesnt have all the interesting social critique of Lalon, nor does it have the fiery individualism of Hason or Nozrul. It is interesting because he is a comparatively modern baul, so his songs reference modern things like trains and cars and modern urban life which would never be found in Lalon or Hason raja. It was alright, but honestly the least impressive of all the baul poets I have read. Shah Abdul Karim: Selected Songs of Shah Abdul Karim Translated into English by Shah Abdul Karim
